How to Use the Strategic Growth Assessment

The process takes about an hour and will result in a clear picture of where internal system development is lagging. The tool is most useful as a contribution to the assessment of internal strengths and weaknesses in support of strategic management, but can also be used by leadership at any time to create a conceptual framework for how the organization is evolving or to look critically at one or more management systems. The Key Tasks included here are illustrative of good management practice in nonprofit organizations that provide services. They do not cover every aspect of each function, but rather are designed to spur discussion around this function and to anchor that discussion around important developmental tasks.

There are a total of ten dimensions that are captured in the tool:

  • Program Strategy Development
  • Human Resources
  • System Participation
  • Marketing & Public Relations
  • Fund Development
  • Information Management
  • Financial Management
  • Risk Management
  • Physical Plant
  • Quality Assurance

For those who wish to look more deeply at how well Key Developmental Tasks are being accomplished, each Key Task in each management system for each stage of development has been further defined with a set of qualitative Indicators. These Indicators can be purchased as a full set or individually by management system of interest.
